Meeting with Sugandh

Sugandh Goel

Yesterday I met my old friend and room mate of my hostel(during Engineering days) Sugandh Goel. We decided to meet near his office which was next to Haldiraam’s on Mathura road. I went there and this hero was standing there chatting to two people. Just as he saw me we embraced each other. We were meeting after 2 years. He talked to the people for some time that went away after taking his number.
I told him ,”Abe Kamine kaisa hai. Hero ban gaya tu toh. Kaun the yeh log."

Myself and Sugandh

He told,”Maloom nahi yaar.Khade ho kar tera wait kar raha tha, so thought of chatting with them in mean time” with this he gave his famous grin.
Samajh nahi aaya. Chodo.

We chatted for 1 hour. At 4 O’clock his shift was going to start.

Myself, Sugandh and Amardeep(a psycho surd) were room partners in KGCE engineering college in Karjat, for 2 years. That was my one of the best times in hostel.
Amardeep was too studious and wanted pin drop silence while studying. Sugandh was fan of Hard rock and cannot study until music is played and cigarette is in hand. So I used to get to see nice fighting among both of them. Though Sugandh was junior to both of us, we treated him like our friend…and most of the time he used bully us….In 1 hour we talked about everything, old college days, current job, future planning, old friends and what not.

We remembered an episode when I brought a punching bag and attached it to ceiling in centre of our room. I was too fitness freak and used to punch bag every now and then. Sugandh also caught this fever and we use to punch the bag to remove our engineering frustration. Amardeep used to hate this. He used to sleep in the far end of room. At night when he used to get up to go to loo, in dark he used to bang his head to punching bag,in half sleep, which used to hang in centre of room. This was story of every night. Whenever this happened he used to give a string of bad words. We used to laugh too much whenever this happened.

Sugandh told me that few days back he had a tragic accident. He fell from 2nd floor of a building.

I asked him.”Abe, tu zinda kaise bach gaya…”

Sugandh: hehe, itne aasani se thodi maroonga sale. I was in hospital for more than a week. My teeth are shaking, I had serious injury in my brain which lead to memory loss for almost a week. Abhi kuch dino se chalne layak hua hoon nahin toh halat bahut kharab thi.

Then he reminded me that its time for him to move. 1 Hour was over…pata hi nahi chala. We decided to meet on coming Sunday with Umesh Bansal.

After meeting him I was waiting for Khatara bus to come. Sunddenly atmosphere became very pleasant. Sky was cloudy and wind was blowing. I decided to walk to my home. Ie. From Haldiraam’s to Badarpur border…that’s more than 3 kms. The breeze was very nice and I went on walking. It had been very long since I had taken long walk. This is pic near NTPC on Mathura road,Badarpur. The time is 4.15 Pm. Doesn’t weather look too cool.

Bed Cleaning

I am working too hard these days. Half of the day goes into washing clothes, cleaning utensils and cooking food. No I am not working as some Ramu Kaka at someone’s home, but this is story of my own place. After firing of my first maid, I am struggling hard to keep everything at place. No wonder firing of my second maid Shakuntala is also on table. I am thinking over it.
Last Saturday I went to my bank in Asaf Ali Road. I received shock of my life there. I have spent huge amount in last three months and my bank balance is in terrible state….full to ujada chaman. I came back home and searched my calculator. Unable to find it I settled with calc on my PC and started calculating all the major expenses in last 3 months. After lot of mental utha-patak it came into picture that I just don’t know where I spent half of the amount I withdrew from bank. If this would have been case with some other boy it was understandable. But with me!!! No!! I am a very good. I don’t have any habit that asks for huge amount of money. I don’t smoke, perfect teetotaler, Girl friends bilkul nahi…toh paise gaye kahan. I am not a guy who spends whole night with munni bai…chee chee. I am a bal brahmachari. Whole night I wasn’t able to sleep due this million dollar question.

I found today that nothing at my home is in place. Every small paper and things are getting lost. So I decided to start a massive ghar-cleaning operation. First I decided to clean my bed where I sleep…alone.

Now, my bed is a wonderful place. There are so many things on it that it seems as if mini economy thrives there. You will find everything on my bed. That’s my way of reducing redundancy in physical activity like moving hands, getting up, moving around. Therefore all the things I need I keep on bed sitting on which I work on computer. On half of bed things are kept and on remaining half I sleep. After cleaning I found out so many things which were out of my eyes for months.
Well…the things which I found on my bed, apart from clothes and bed sheets are:

1) Small container of Table salt.
2) Deodorant
3) Two Match boxes….I search them everytime when power goes off.
4) Scissor…I was about to purchase new one.
5) Aerogaurd, mosquito repellant
6) Empty container that was 1 week back full of namkeen
7) Business Card holder
8) Spiral File
9) Lease documents of my room
10) Box of useless CDs
11) Cello Tape
12) Lots of newspaper
13) Chacha Chaudhari Comic.
14) 1 fork and 2 spoons
15) 2 onions, 1 potato
16) 4 Pens,1 pencil,1 compass box…(Wow)
17) Marker pen
18) 2 CDs (which are useless now)

The bed cleaning exercise therefore proved to be fruitful. I have spent 1 extra hour to sort out my clothes and keep them at one place.

Now back to study.

Resolutions

I just came back after playing a weird game called Maara-Mitti. The game is quite simple. You have to hit any other person in front of you with a small soft ball. Outside on terrace Harit,Miling along with their friends were playing this game. After Electric power failure I came out of room. As soon as the kids saw me standing outside, they forced me to join the game. I asked how to play this game.
They told”Arre bahiyya jo saamne dikhe usse is ball se maro. Is game ko maara-mitti kehte hain”
And next moment I was in game. This game I played when I was small, in Mumbai. But we called it Abba-Dhubbi.I think this name was given to it because this game must have originated in Abu dhabi(just my another weird theory).

So game started. This bachcha party has amazing aim. Even I am starting at far away distance they use to hit me with great accuracy. Rarely did they miss anyone. It was very difficult for me to hit this chinti minti small people who are hopping like frog everywhere. Majority of times I lost the mark hitting everything accept the target. Later I realized due to my size I was too easy to be targeted and chotu public took full advantage of this. Later I was the only one being hit. Whoever grabs the ball, hits me. In 15 minutes I was out of breath and sat down. I raised my hands surrendering to their might.

These people were playing long before I came to play with them and even now they are not tired. I was amazed at the energy of kids. I was sweating heavily and sat on plastic chair on terrace. The game was resumed and everyone continued playing. I felt as if I have ran 1000 mile marathon. Then I remembered of Budhiya. Recently he was in news for his amazing feat to run a Marathon in record time that too at age of 6 years.
These kids have amazing stamina.

Today I realized that I have been wasting too much of my time. I decided to make a time table for myself and set of rules which I will follow strictly. Recently I came to know that I have been spending too much money. Where the money goes …..I don’t know. So I have started cost cutting measures to check my spending. The steps I took are:

1) I fired my maid who used to clean my utensils and wash clothes. If need arises I will fire another one also who comes to clean the room. The consequence of firing the maid was apparent first day itself when I saw all the plates and glasses in scullery to be cleaned.
2) No weekend outing with friends. This is the major source of wasteful spending. No movies nothing. On weekends I will sit at home and study.
3) No making calls from land line phone. I will now make calls from Mobile only. Also I will change my mobile from post paid to pre paid to keep track on money spent. My target is to bring down the telephone charges from 2000Rs to 500. That will be a good saving.
4) No eating out. I will cook food at home. I will eat out only if its necessary or I am truly not in position to cook.
5) No purchasing of unnecessary books, newspapers and magazines. First read the pile of unread books and novels. Then purchase new ones. Only one newspaper is enough and one business magazine. Will cut the subscription of remaining 2 newspapers.
6) No unnecessary out of station traveling.
7) No lending of money to friends. Enough of charity.

Hope my plan of action works. Apart from financial planning I jotted down few rules that I will be strictly following daily.

1) Study minimum 4 hrs for CAT daily and 8 hours on week ends.
2) Get up early in morning latest by 8.00.
3) Do puja and read Hanuman Chalissa daily after taking bath.
4) Not spending more than 2 hours on internet excluding the time required to do official work or study related surfing(what is that?). Strictly no to Yahoo messenger and Orkut.
5) Improve writing skills by writing atleast one review per week on Mouthshut.com.
6) Strictly ban on porn.
7) Clean the room regularly.
8) Strictly follow the rules made for friends(will be posting about that in great detail soon)
9) Be sincere in official work(Is there any work by the way?)
10) Exercise daily two times a day.

I know following all these resolutions is Herculean task for me…but as it is said where there will there is something something. So I am following all the stuff from today itself. Though not fully…but at least I have started following.
“Well begun is half done”

Friends

Just as usual in morning I got up from half sleep. My maid was banging door. She is the one who wakes me up every morning. The day she doesn’t come I sleep up to mid-afternoon. In olden days people used to keep a rooster to wake them up. I have kept a maid. I gave a quick glance at my watch, 11 O’Clock. Good she is in time.I grabbed my Tee Shirt and went to open the door. My maid was as usual banging it continuously as if Gabbar Singh is back of her. I opened the door and let her in.
At the same time phone rang. I picked up the phone.

It was from Umesh Bansal(in pic). My hostel mate. He is an Instrumentation engineer and currently working as a Manager in Kotak Securities. After few minutes of talk he asked if I can give a guest lecture on Equities and Derivatives and train newly recruited executives in his company in selling. I asked who the executives are. He informed me that they are fresh MBA graduates. That was something new. I am just a Mechanical Engineer and was being invited to give lecture to MBA grads that too on Finance which is not my core field. I told him that I am ready to give lecture. I had worked in sharekhan.com for a long time and had a good experience in share market therefore it wasn’t a big deal for me.
Myself and Umesh are similar in many ways. We both were mavericks who preferred to do things in their own way. In our engineering days we were the one who gave least time to studies. Its not that we were wasting time whole day, we were interested in something else. During exams when all the students in hostel spent most of the time slogging in books and Journals; myself and Umesh used to go on the terrace of hostel and continuously talk and discuss hours and hours about Economy, Politics and Share Market. It was our routine, after dinner at 8’O’ Clock we used to get perched on terrace and talk endlessly upto 11Pm. He was too much addicted to Business and share markets. His room was full of business news papers and Financial journals. Dhirubhai Ambani was his role model. In his room there was his big poster. In the hostel we joked that,”Dhirubhai ke do nahin teen bete hain. Anil, Mukesh aur Umesh.” In our whole engineering we rarely took studies seriously. Study was the thing which was reserved for preparatory leave. Both of us used to be late in submitting assignments, journals and project work. In our whole engineering life we never did even a single thing on time. Umesh was famous for one more feat. He had cleared 99% of his papers with 40 marks[that’s our passing mark]. Therefore many students used to take guidance of Umesh Sir and most of the time he was spotted around hostel giving lecture on”Clearing paper with fourty marks”.
We were mocked as the hopeless lazy people of the hostel. After engineering we both had same notion…that engineering is not our field.
I went ahead and joined Online share trading firm ShareKhan.com and Umesh came back to his home town in Faridabad and also joined a small share broking firm. Most of our friends with good marks joined Engineering companies and we were treated as a crazy people who had studied engineering for four years and now working in finance.
Aneways, we both were successful in our fields. I left sharekhan.com and joined an Australian Software firm that develops advanced software in Business Analysis and Umesh is now Manager in Kotak Securities and has MBA grads working under him. Ok enough of flashback memories….
Last Monday I went to his office in Faridabad for the lecture. It went smoothly. Through him I came to know that my another room mate and Junior Sugandh Goel is also in Delhi these days. He was there in Delhi for more than 8 months. Being in one city we were unaware of each other. Big news came later. Umesh told that he comes to work in Badarpur daily and his office is besides Mohan Industrial Estate, where I go to work. These 8 months we were working in same area and never knew of each other. I took his number from Umesh and called him at night.

When he picked up the phone I recognized his voice. As I said Hi, first thing that came out of his mouth was string of good words which I cant write. That was typical of Mr Goel. Umesh had told him that I will be calling him. He recognized my voice and was too happy to hear from me. This guy was my junior and a Telecommunications Engineer. For two years he was my room partner. These two years I actively did passive smoking. He was a chain smoker.

Enough for now. Next post will dedicated to Goel Saheb and our meeting.

The quota fracas

I don’t know where the nation will be steered under the Netas who are ready to go beyond any limits to achieve their agenda. It is really very sad to see that the educated and knowledgeable people are not respected in this country. Those playing as tail wagging dogs displaying their loyalty to Politicians are awarded. Today in whatever position India is(in case of development), that is the outcome of hard work of very few visionaries, business houses and NGOs. Government has very low contribution in it. Infact there have been many cases where the politicians have played a spoilsport for development because they did not get their “share” or their selfish inetersts were not served.

Its very good to see that Doctors of Delhi, Mumbai and other regions are spearheading the protests against job quota. I am shocked to see the treatment of these medical students by Police. Yesterday they were sprayed with water canons in Delhi and in Mumbai they were lathi charged. Some one should inform these Khaki guys that these are not some local goons who have come to protest because they have been given good amount for the day. These are educated people who have come out to protest for the greater interest of nation and not to fulfill their selfish needs.

By and large their protests were peaceful. Then why such a treatment.

But there is something that worried me.
Till yesterday evening 2 patients died who needed immediate medical attention, but due to strike of Doctors were unattended. A lady named Simran Kelkar, patient of thyroid, was dead after shuttling from one hospital to another.
[Click on the newspaper clipping for details and enlarged views].

The Doctors have gone on strike for very good reasons. But due to their absence people are losing their lives. So what has to be done in this case. The strike is important to see to it that injustice is not done by government, but saving lives of people is also important. Its different that Netas don’t care whether people lose lives or not. They will enjoy the prevailing stand off; giving statements to media and blaming students. Someone has to think in this direction too.

Sam Pitroda, Chairman of Knowledge Commision, submitted report to PM Manmohan Singh about the decision of Commision to oppose the proposed hike in Quota. He was lambasted by Arjun Singh for being careless and not taking in to consideration intrests of “larger sections of deprived” (read Vote Bank). Sharad Yadav also jumped into fray to cash on the political gains arising from the fracas and blamed him(Pitroda) for being ignorant.

I think time has come for Arjun Singh and people like him to pack their bags, take Kamandal and head off to Himalayas.

In between, Shayan Munshi was caught when he was trying to escape out of India.
Dear Shayan its not easy to get away so easily. You get to pay heavily for helping the accomplices.

*May you rot in hell*(I did not say this...I heard my neighbour quoting)

I hate you all

Early morning I read newspaper and my mood for spoiled for whole day. Congress and his allies have sweeping victory in Assembly elections in three states. The biggest disturbing news was that Sonia Gandhi won Rai Bareily by elections by record margin.ie 4.17 lakh votes.

I dont have anything against Congress...had actually. But I hate this Gandhi Family after death of Rajiv Gandhi. See this lady Sonia Gandhi. What credentials she has to head the largest party of India, that she is wife of ex prime minister.Nothing else.DO you have any other reasons? What I know of this lady is that she was not interested to stay in India after getting married to Rajiv. After she was eventually brought to India she refused to stay in family home with her mother in law. Also it was once told by Sharad Pawar that she was not interested in having Indian passport and Citizenship and even after staying in India for a long time she considered Italy as her real home.It was when Rajiv Gandhi contested election for PM she was made to have Indian citizenship to avoid future controversy. After PV Narsimha Rao,she was invited to head Congress....a lady who was never interested in affaris of India. That was the time when I concluded that congress party is a party of stupid morons who dont care about national pride or security and will take any demagogue decision to grab majority and win elections.I have biggest anger on Indian people.....dont they read newspapers?dont they know her back ground? It is said that she was on the payroll of KGB during Indira Gandhi's rule. And everyone knows this that she had contacts with Quatrochi, that Italian Bofors guy.
Please dont remind me of her sacrifices, leaving the post of PM then recently vacating the post of NAC on charges of its being Office of Profit. She knows very well that she is heading a bunch of morons and post of PM is just for namesake. And it actually is.Manmohan Singh doesnt seems to be taking decision on his own. There is a coterie of politicians in congresss like Pranab Mukherjee,Arjun Singh,Natwar Singh(thank god he is out of scene now),Ambika Soni,Meera Kumar,Shiela Dixit who are just tail; wagging dogs.Due to Sonia they have got lots of power for which they craved for long.Just look at the list.None of them is a mass leader. They are all old bubboons remenant of the period of License Raj.Their working style and decisions shows this. What to say bout the Arjun Singh who thinks theres still space remaining to rape open category students...I dont want to get into it.

Now comes Rahul Gandhi. This guy after his initial studies in India has spent most of his youth in America. He has a columbian girl friend. He came to India and within 6 to 7 months was given the status of a forth coming national leaders.Hello....they dont teach Indian problems of illiteracy, poverty, etc etc in America. This guy who,I am sure, doesnt know anything about India,is said to become a national leader.Again what credentials he has....he is son of Rajiv Gandhi.Nothing else.

I see the future of India like this.If Congress goes ahead then after Sonia,Rahul will be PM.After him his Columbian girl friend will head nation.Just like Sonia-Rajiv episode history will repeat itself.

According to me...look at many congress workers who work at the root level. Many of them are with congress since their youth and know each and every problem of nation.Groom them, give them opportunity...not these phirangis.

Aneway, a bit good news is that Amma lost election.Good for you.Very good.I will be very happy to see if Karunanidhi throws her in jail in same manner how she did to him.

Summer Rain

It Rained It rained yesterday. Along with rain there were hails too. Atlast there was a bit of relief from heat for some time. Sunrays are so scorching that they are enough to turn a dark guy like me to a perfectly black body within few minutes. I thought of enjoying the rainy showers, but rejected the idea. I sat on my terrace and watched kids of society shouting and playing in rain. Winds were so cool and soothing.

Enjoying Rain

Milind offering me Hail

This is first time in my life when I had seen hails. You never get to see these hails in Mumbai. Though there are hail storms in Mumbai, I never got the opportunity to see one.

But after sometime Power failure played a spoilsport. There is power failure daily in afternoon from 2 to 5 pm. Now they have started load shedding even at night. I came to know from newspapers that my place Badarpur is one of the few places of Delhi where power theft is at peak, therefore the power failures are more in this region.

Today in afternoon something great happened in the areas around Badarpur. Demolition squad of MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) was removing the illegal shops and structures around the main road towards Mithapur.

>

I think its good that government is active in this kind of beautification. This has been going around in Delhi for a month. Illegal structures and commercial establishments in residential areas are been demolished. What I have come to know from newspapers is that the shop keepers and big businessmen pay hefty bribes to these MCD officials to get their shops approved. This leads to much sound pollution and disturbance in residential areas. Hope if our Mumbai municipality also does something similar. But what is wrong with this demolition drive is that they do not demolish shops or buildings owned by Netas or politicians. Even after the directive of Supreme Court, MCD has not touched any of the constructions of Politicians.

My happiness for rain is short lived. I have been just told by my neighbor that when it rains in mid summer then humidity increases and due to it heat will be more unbearable in coming days. I will be moving to Chandigarh soon for couple of days and this world selling girl has already given me loads of reason stating that my trip will be of great problem in this weather*angry face*.

Orkut

Atlast after lots of trouble I managed to get into Orkut. I have been trying to get into this community for a long time. Most of my friends orkut around. After signing in Hi5,Seeq,Names Database etc etc I thought this must be one more joker of pack. I received dose of their bulk stupid mails on regular basis informing me of joining of new fools like me to the group. I heard too muc of this orkut and thought of joining it. I received the invitation from my friend and joined it. But when next time I tried to login in it I wasn’t able to go through it. It just said ”The account has been deleted”. I received one more invitation from another friend. But I was not able to register myself to it. I told my friends to resend the invitation again but event that was fruitless. In the end I made a new email Id on gmail for orkut. Due to good shot of luck and invitation of panduraam I was able to join it.
Orkut seemed much better than its contemporaries. Its scrapping stuff is good.

I was able to contact many of my engineering college friends on first day it self.

Enough for now….getting back to scrapping

Update(baccha party,Panduraam,CAT)

Garmi Jalti Tapti Garmi….aaya mausam thande thande dermicool ka.
But this garmi cannot even be controlled by the dermi cool. I have already finished one pack of powder. I take a spoon full in evening and one spoonful at night before sleeping, but it didn’t help either.

I suddenly realized last week that I should start preparing for my CAT exams now. CAT isn’t like engineering exams where a month long study during preparatory leave is enough to get fourty maraks(passing maraks). My friends have long back started preparations for it.I had given CAT one year back when I was just out of college and was working in sharekhan.com. I got 72 percentile. Now don’t mock at me. This is what I got with preparation of one Saturday night. So just imagine what will be my score if I started studying from today itself…hmmm…….72.33 no 72.80 minimum. So I went to this book market in New Delhi. Its my fav place to hang around. Theres a Sunday book market here in New Delhi. Exactly the same kind of what you find at Fort in Mumbai. But the one in Delhi is cheaper and has more variety of books being sold has more variety.

I caught filthy bus of route number 405 from my place at Badarpur border for New Delhi. From Asaf Ali road to Delhi Gate and further upto Golcha Theater you get to see loads of books being sold at damn cheap rates.

Be it novels, magazines, notes academic books everything is sold here at rates below half of the original price. Obviously 99.9% of books are pirated. So after going around I purchased notes of IMS to start with my CAT preparation. The book-walah asked for 350Rs for the entire set. After good bargaining I went away paying 120Rs for same. Then I purchased book of Khalil Gibran, which is also called omnibus series which consisted of his 9 books. I purchased it for 100 bucks( seller was asking for 250).

There was something disturbing this week. My best buddies Harit and Milind have decided to quit blogging.

Theres some guy who comes on their blog and leaves filthy comments. They were too depressed due to it. Actually I never wanted them to get indulged in blogging stuff. But Harit who is a big techy shaitan came across my blog and made one for himself. Milind was next to come. But once they started blogging, I started to appreciate them for what they post. What they posted was really very innocent and I don’t want them to stop blogging. So I recommended them not venture on others blog and remain confined to their own.

Well, something good also happened. Panduram urf Pandora urf Neha Sinha came back to bloggerland. A bit of credit for this goes to me also(0.00001%). I was the one who went with pistol in hand back of her and threatened her of dire consequences, if she left blogging( As a matter of fact I borrowed the pistol from her). After a string of threatening mails she relented. This is how we played mail-mail

Abhishek to Neha
Oye,
